Launching the UKRI AI CDT Professional Support Network
Behind every successful AI researcher is a dedicated professional support team. On Tuesday, 28 April 2026, we took a big step in strengthening that support by hosting the inaugural meeting of the UKRI AI CDT Professional Support Network at the Institute for Safe Autonomy (ISA), University of York.
Helen Poyer, SAINTS CDT Manager, brought together colleagues from across the UK to discuss the day-to-day realities of managing AI Centres for Doctoral Training.
Key Takeaways from the Day
Our discussions focused on two main areas:
-
Solving Shared Challenges: From administrative logistics to industry engagement, we explored how to better manage the unique requirements of AI CDTs.
-
Building a National Community: We are committed to creating more cross-CDT networking opportunities, including the goal of hosting a dedicated annual event for our Postgraduate Researchers (PGRs).
Expert Updates
We were also joined by Dr. Cameron Ross from UKRI, who provided helpful updates on the national landscape and took the time to answer a wide range of questions from the network. Having that direct line of communication is invaluable as we align our efforts with broader UKRI goals.
What’s Next for the Network?
While this was our first meeting, the goal is to make this a lasting partnership. By working together behind the scenes, we can ensure that PhD researchers in AI—no matter which university they are based at—receive the best possible support, resources, and career opportunities.
A huge thank you to everyone who travelled to York to help get this initiative off the ground. We’re already planning our next session and look forward to seeing this community grow.
